FAQs

Q:  What color are your walls painted?

A: Kitchen, Upstairs Living Room, Master Bedroom: Behr Castle Path
Family Room:  Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan
White planking and trim in all rooms:  Behr Swiss Coffee
Master Bathroom: Sherwin Williams Sea Salt

Q:  Where did you get the arch mirrors in your master bath?

A:  I still get asked this question several times a week.  We purchased them at Lowes, in store.  I have linked to them on my post, but they are no longer available online.   I recently contacted Lowes and they let me know that the mirrors have recently been dropped from their inventory.  They also gave me this info.

"We do have a limited availably left company wide. If you would like assistance in searching for this item as well as placing an order, please contact our Sales Department at 800-445-6937 Option 4, Option 3. Their hours of operation are Monday Saturday, 7:00 a.m. 1:00 a.m. and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. 9:00 p.m. EST." -Lowes Customer Service

I have also found a very similar mirror online here.  It is called the Hovan and you can find it online at Bed Bath and Beyond.  It is much more expensive that the mirrors we purchased at Lowes (ours were just under $80 per mirror), but I would pay for the Hovan if those were the only mirrors available.  I think these mirrors make our bathroom.

Q:  Where did you buy the headboard in your master bathroom and are you still happy with it?

A:  The headboard was purchased at Home Depot in store.  Here is a link to it.  We used the shorter boards  (3 foot) on our walls and the taller boards (8 foot) on the ceiling.  This beadboard is also reversible, so we used the smaller, closer planks on the walls and the larger, wider looking side on the ceiling.  It has been very easy to keep clean and we would definitely use this product again.

Q:  Are you still happy with your exposed shower and which shower head did you buy?

A:  We have had no problems with our shower and yes, we are still happy with it and would use it again.  The shower head was purchased separately from the exposed shower (it doesn't come with a head included).  We purchased the Kohler Bancroft shower head and it gives us a great amount of water pressure.

Q:  What color is the grout in your master bathroom?

A:  The grout in our shower is by TEC (purchased at Lowes) and the color is Silverado.  We went with a slightly darker gray on the floor and the color there is Delorean Gray.

Q:  Your Master Bath is too white!  And you have 3 boys!!  Are you crazy?

A:  OK, so no one actually called me crazy:), but that is how the tone of a few comments seemed to me.  Yes, there is a lot of white in my master bathroom.  I love how the white allows the pretty elements (chandelier, sconces, mirrors, marble countertop, ect) to shine.  The walls aren't white, but most of the main elements are.  This is a master bath.  It is my place to get away from it all.  My boys don't care to spend much time in there. It has not been difficult to keep clean at all.  Bleach is awesome!!  Kitchen and Bath Makeovers recently came to photograph this space and  it needed to be pristine after 6 months of daily use.  It was sparkling clean!  If you like white, I say go for it!   "I just love cleaning my toilet!" said no one ever.  All bathrooms are a pain to clean. Dirt will happen regardless of your color scheme.

Q:  How is your carrera marble countertop holding up in your Master Bathroom?

A:  I love it!  I would choose it again.  I am so glad I didn't pass up the opportunity to have it because it adds such elegance to that space.  Marble will etch.  Ours has.  It doesn't bother me as most of the spots disappear or lighten with time, and they are only noticeable if you look at the counter at eye level.

Q:  Is your husband a contractor?

A:  Nope, my husband, Billy, just loves home improvement projects.  He did work part time for an electrician for a short time to make extra money when we were first married, and he often says he earned so much more in knowledge than he did in $$ during that time.  He loves the challenge of researching and learning how to do something himself.  I scheme up the ideas and he figures out a way to implement them.  We are a good team :)

Q:  What color is your kitchen granite?

A:  Our granite is called Giallo Napoleone.  We purchased it locally (NJ) at All Granite and Marble.

Q:  What paint color are your walls?

A:  Most of our neutral walls are painted Behr Castle Path.  That includes are kitchen, living room and master bedroom.  It is a great greige color.  Our Master Bath is painted Sherwin Williams Sea Salt.  Our foyer and mudroom are both Benjamin Moore Labrador Blue.

Q:  What color is the trim painted in your bathroom, kitchen, etc?

A:  All of the trim in our house is painted in Behr Swiss Coffee.  We decided it would  be more consistent and easier for touch ups if we stuck with the same color throughout.

Q:  What are the measurements of your corner stone fireplace?

A:  Our stone fireplace (including the stone) is 7 ft wide.  The post containing more specifics can be found here.

Q:  Where did you buy your wood floors in your family room, kitchen and living room.  How are they holding up to 2 Golden Retrievers?

A: Yes, we have real wood floors and yes, we have 2 Goldens. We did a lot of research before installing these floors. In our last house, we had oak hardwood floors that were original to that house (we had them re-finished by a professional on site)  and they were a natural color. They did not hold up well at all. They were a nightmare to keep clean and full of scratches. We had to have them refinished every few years.

I do not think any other flooring looks or feels like wood does so we were determined to find a solution. In this house, we started with one room with our current flooring. It held up beautifully so we kept going with it. They are now 5 years old and we are still happy with them. Our floors are 5 inch hand scraped oak made by Shaw’s and the color is Vintage Hazelnut. We purchased them at Lowes. I am not sure if they still carry our exact floors. I think the most important things to keep in mind are to get a somewhat distressed finish so that scratches aren’t as noticeable. Also, a medium color seems to work the best with Golden fur :) One last thing, in our experience, the factory finish that comes on pre-finished hardwood flooring holds up much better to scratches from dog’s nails than the finish that you get when you have someone come into your home to do them on site.

Q:  How did you come up with the blog name's name, Golden Boys and Me?

A:  I didn't start out as a home decor blogger, so when I named the blog (which was really just a personal journal at the time), I named it after who I was writing about- my Golden (Retriever), my Boys (including my husband) and me.  I wrote a post about it here.

If you still have a questions or just need more details, please feel free to e-mail me (courtney@goldenboysandme.com).  Thanks so much for reading!!

    1. Both were purchased at Vintage Tub and Bath.com. The bath faucet was part of a tub package that included the tub and faucet. The shower faucet is Elizabethan Classics Exposed Shower in chrome. Hope that helps!

    1. Hello! Thank you for your compliments on our Master Bathroom! I so appreciate it when people let me know it has inspired them.

Our tile was purchased right off the shelf at Lowes so it should be easy to find. It is the only white tile of that kind that they keep in stock in the store. It is American Olean Sausalito. Here is a link:http://www.lowes.com/pd_302928-74035-SL012OCT26HC1P2_0__?productId=3426464&Ntt=white+mosaic+tile&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dwhite%2Bmosaic%2Btile&facetInfo=#BVRRWidgetID

The grout used was also purchased at Lowes. The brand is Tec Skilset and he color is Delorean Gray.

      Good luck!

  8. Oh my, your bathroom is gorgeous! I am building a new house and was googling for ideas to save money and came across your blog. What a rare find and with soooooo much helpful information! I am so appreciative that you took the time to post all of this! I have a question about the shower. Did the glass doors come with a base and fiberglass panels and if so, did you use the base? Did you discard the panels and base if you didn't use those materials? thanks soooo much!

    1. Hi Sandy,

Thank you so much for your kind comment about our bathroom. I love when people let me know that our home has inspired them!

To answer your question about the shower, we purchased the unit that included the fiberglass floor (base) and glass doors. It did not include the acrylic walls. I was happy to find that these units were sold that way because I never really liked the look of the acrylic walls. I think the tiled walls give the whole thing a higher end look.

I hope that helps and let me know if I can answer any more questions for you. Good luck with your new home!

  9. That bathroom is gorgeous! On the mirrors - they can be found at Uttermost.com. Item number 11912B. The company sells to the trade only but there is a dealer locator on the site that will direct people to local buying options.

    1. Thank you! I store everything on a wall of shelves in our basement. It isn't the neatest space, but maybe one day I will organize it enough to photograph it for the blog. It is definitely on the to-do list.
