Last weekend was just glorious with temperatures around 70. Just perfect! Much to my kids' dismay, we declared Saturday morning our annual mulch day. The day when we drive to Home Depot a couple of times and fill up our SUV with bags of mulch. And then come home to spread it all. They did a great job and while they did all the work, I supervised while relaxing with a cup of coffee. Just kidding, I got to work on planting a few containers for spring.
I like to use a variety of planters for my container gardens. I picked up the white wooden planter at Home Depot while we were getting the mulch. For the price of just under $10, it was worth it not to DIY it. Sometimes I just take the easier route! I added the word "bloom" with chalk and it was ready to go.
Whenever I am planting containers, I like to start by giving it some height. For this container, I used daffodils to achieve that. I then added some pansies. In our zone, the pansies will last longer than the daffodils. Once the daffodils die, I will pull them out and by then the pansies should be filling the whole container. The pansies will last until the warmest summer temperatures arrive.
For the taller black container, I used a metal weathervane from Target to add some height. Then I added the tulips, hyacinths and more pansies. I also enjoy using some unexpected containers in my garden. This year, I added an old galvanized funnel to a hook in between 2 Adirondack chairs.
I added some pansies and it will fit in even more in the next couple of weeks.
The little seating area makes up for our lack of a big farmhouse front porch. Oh, how I dream of having a porch again! Unfortunately, that's not part of our plan for this house so this will need to suffice for now.
Over by our front door, I added some more spring flowers. This time, I used some flowering branches from Trader Joe's for height. I just stuck them into the dirt and added the other flowers around them.A new door mat from Lowes, a diy geranium wreath and a welcome sign all come together to create an inviting entry for our guests. Red geraniums are my favorite summer flower but I need to wait a couple of more weeks before planting them here. I added one red Ranunculus plant to pick up on the red from the wreath.

Thanks so much for including photos of Keeper and Dax. Keeper looks so much like my Daisy who lived to be 14 and a half years old. A good and faithful companion!
ReplyDeleteWow! 14 and 1/2, you were so lucky to have her that long. I am glad to know you appreciate the pictures of the dogs too.
DeleteYour flowers look beautiful and I love that door mat - it's so you! So nice to see your doggie models out enjoying the nice weather. It sure has been beautiful this week. Too bad my son's allergies are out of control! Enjoy your weekend!

DeleteLooks beautiful Courtney! Hopefully you got the mulch sale at Home Depot. Last weekend I had my husband load up the pickup truck last weekend as well. My favorite picture is of course the flowers and the puppies!
ReplyDeleteYes!! We got the mulch at Home Depot for 5 bags for $10. We always look for that great sale. Hopefully we will see some more sun this week.
DeleteDear Courtney,
ReplyDeleteAs I drown here in grief, your blog posts bring me a little happiness. To see all the things you create in your lovely home reminds me of days gone by when things on Lavender Hill were joyful. Thank you (sort of) neighbor, for giving me glimpses of your sweet and beautiful home....
Gena

ReplyDeleteThanks Susan!
Deleteyour entry is lovely. The colors just make me happy.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteGorgeous!! Your property is just lovely - and Dax got so big!!
ReplyDeleteI love everything, Courtney! Oh, how I wish I had someone to help me much my garden beds! Your potted flowers are great and I like your ideas for adding height. I have a lot of pots but also many garden beds along our house and fence. Our patio is surrounded by 4 foot hedges and it had finally occurred to me that short pots are getting lost in this area so I'm looking for a few urns.
ReplyDeleteLove your dog pics and the little one is definitely getting past that 'puppy' look! :-D
Jane
Hi Jane! Yes, it is a huge help to have them spread the mulch. I will enjoy it while they are still all home to help me. :)
