The easiest part of this all is that I simply used two boxes of store bought white cake mix. I mixed up both boxes together, following the directions on the box and divided the batter evenly amongst 3 9-inch cake pans. After baking, I then wrapped the cake layers individually in plastic wrap and chilled them overnight in the refrigerator. I had read that chilling them makes them easier to cut. In the morning, I trimmed the layers using a serrated knife so the layers were all even and flat.
For frosting, I used 2 containers of Duncan Hines Whipped Frosting (told you this was easy!). I put a layer of frosting between each layer and on the top, and then smeared a little of what seeped out on the sides to give it a rustic feel.
For the flowers, I used a simple bouquet from the grocery store. I washed the flowers, cut off the stems and arranged them on top of the cake. Note: I was concerned with the food safety of the flowers, so I used a tip I saw on YouTube. I put a layer of thick frosting on top of the cake and laid the flowers on top of that blob of frosting. To serve the cake, just remove the flowers and remove the top blob of frosting with a spatula, so that the flowers haven't touched anything that will actually be eaten. My kids happily devoured it after I was finished taking these pictures.
It is hard to tell in these pictures, but the cake server is engraved with our names and it was the wedding favor we gave out to all of our guests at our wedding 20 years ago. I love that when we go to the homes of our family & friends and they are still using this cake server all these years later.
Have you ever made a naked cake? I am so happy with how this cake turned out that I am planning to make one for Easter too. I am excited to share my spring home tour with you. I hope you will stop back to visit!
I had never heard of or seen a naked cake until I was at a wedding reception last fall. The wedding cake was done as a naked cake and I thought it looked awful. To each his own, I guess. I love icing, so no naked cakes will be made by me. Ha!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Ann. I hope you didn't tell the bride her cake was awful! I agree, to each his own. Have a great day :)
DeleteIt's a more modern look than the old fondant/icing cakes. I'm sure you didn't really mean to tell Courtney you think her cake looks awful. ;)
DeleteI didn't tell anyone that the cake looked awful. Not the bride nor Courtney. To me, and me only, a naked cake just looks unfinished. I had never seen or heard of it before I saw the wedding cake. It doesn't make it taste any different. HA! I just prefer lots of icing.
DeleteGood morning, I'm not big on commenting usually but if you're anything like me, negative comments sting and you deserve to hear something positive! This is beautiful, absolutely lovely! I've been swooning over naked cakes for a while now and I think you motivated me to give it a try...perfect timing with kids on spring break as they'll love to help make it...and then make it disappear! :) Thanks for all of the inspiration you give!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Erin. For your lovely comment and your support too. It means a lot, but you already knew that :) Enjoy spring break with your kids!!

ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty Courtney! I'm in the little bit of icing camp too so this is a perfect solution. You are blowing my mind about the 2 mixes for the three pans by the way, I love pretty cakes that have height but couldn't figure out how to get the look with just one mix. I'm definitely try this! Hugs, CoCo
ReplyDeleteHi CoCo! I found the idea to use the 2 mixes in 3 pans recently too and I was totally, "why didn't I think of that sooner?". I hope you try it and love it too. Thanks for stopping by today.
Deletelove,love,love...and yes, she probably did. ;)
ReplyDeleteMichele
Michele, you made me literally laugh out loud. Thank you for the support!!
DeleteLove this idea, and what a pretty cake too.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by my blog today, Marty. And for your lovely comment too.
DeleteThis cake is awesome Courtney. Just beautiful. I am a big fan of the naked cake. It lets the cake taste come through more than the sweet frosting. The flowers make this so pretty and unique. Happy Easter my friend. Hope Billy is off for Easter. All my peeps are off which is a miracle so it will be so fun to all be together on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kris
Hi Kris!
DeleteThanks so much. I am now a big fan of the naked cake too. Happy Easter to you too. Unfortunately, Billy is working 3-11 on Sunday, but we are making the best of it and hosting a brunch at our house so he will be there for most of it. Enjoy the day with your family. I know how much you appreciate it when everyone can be together on the actual holiday. I hope you are happily planning away your new house. So much possibility, right?
Hello Courtney....just LOVE the naked cake!!! I have to admit, I've never heard of one before but they make total sense to me! Traditional icing is so sweet...and most people (especially my daughter) only eat the icing between the layers...and don't get me started on fondant lol. I love the rustic look of this cake too. I realize it's not for everyone, but I could imagine this type of cake at a rustic barn wedding or affair. The fresh flowers and simplicity of the cake make it so elegant!! Thanks for the blog post...I will be trying one soon!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lori!! It makes my day to hear that I inspired you to try one soon. I think you will love it.
DeleteI'm in the "the more frosting the better" camp but I love the way this cake looks. You've staged it beautifully - especially the flowers!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jill :)
DeleteLOVE the naked cake!! It is the new rage at weddings and with the flowers added , I think they are gorgeous!!! One of the weddings I attended they put different jams and curds between all the layers and then the frosting looked just like yours……wow…it was so delicious!! I can't wait to see your tour as you are one of my favorite decor bloggers!! Thanks for all the effort you put into these blogs!!! See ya tomorrow!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Susan! I haven't been to a wedding with a naked cake yet, but I would love to see one that is professionally done in person. See you tomorrow :)
DeleteI think your cake is beautiful and the flowers are so pretty! And to be honest...naked, dressed, filled...it's CAKE. I'm going to LOVE it lol! Looking forward to your tour!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda!! And I couldn’t agree more with you…it’s just CAKE. What’s not to love about cake? lol.
DeleteI love, love, love the look of this cake. (Even without the beloved frosting, lol). I found your blog via your instagram feed and am enjoying it so much. I just wanted you to know that I featured your naked cake on my blog last Saturday as one of my Shout Out Saturday favorites. Have a great week. Patty
ReplyDeleteThank so much, Patty!! I so appreciate your kind words and the feature. :)
DeleteVery nice photos. Liked the cake a lot. My birthday is coming and was looking for such great ideas for birthday decorations. I will host party at party venues in Los Angeles and want to make it memorable for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI read that Post and got it fine and informative.
