Winter Decor in our Living Room

Planked gallery wall ideas - www.goldenboysandme.com
This winter, I decided to experiment with a bit of more neutral decor in our upstairs living room.  I love color and I will not be giving up using it in our home anytime soon, but I thought it might be refreshing to keep a little less color in here for the winter.  Nature definitely inspires my decor choices, so it feels fitting to have more grays and whites during the winter months when that is what the landscape outside our window looks like.

We got our new sofa just as I was beginning to decorate for Christmas, so it was fun to have this sofa in the room after all of the holiday decor was away.  It felt new again.
We also added the wall planking just before Christmas.  I need to write a tutorial on how we did that too.  We did it on the cheap using very affordable materials and I love the way it turned out.

I added in a few more plants because I think the space needed it to keep things warmed up with all that white, grey and black.  Hopefully, I can keep my new Fiddle Leaf Fig from Home Depot alive.  So far so good.  But it has gone up in price since I ordered mine a few weeks ago.  I paid $16 and now it is $29.97. Wonder what's up with that big price jump?

I have been finding so much inspiration in the book titled, "The New Bohemians" by Justina Blakeley
that is on the end table.  I can definitely feel my style evolving in that direction lately. I am drawn to spaces that feel collected and full of things that the people who live in that room love. I am enjoying interesting spaces, rather than highly designed, picture perfect rooms.  Here's a quick picture of one of my favorite pages in the book.

I even love the design on the opening and closing pages.  One thing is for sure, I definitely need more plants!  The alive type that need sun and water.

Whoops, guess I went off on a book review tangent!  Back to our living room.

I kept things really simple on the chalkboard in our entryway.

I added a little bit of color on our farmhouse hutch.  Maybe this space isn't so neutral after all?  Let's call it neutral-ish.

The vase garland from Christmas is still hanging on our mantel.  I refreshed it with a new bunch of Eucalyptus from Trader Joe's that will last at least a month.

Our Ikea Hack coffee table just doesn't look the same without the big round basket on the bottom shelf that we removed because of the puppy.  Well, the puppy thinks that spot is a perfect place to hang out.

When it come time to decorate for Spring, I will probably add in some more color, but for now I am enjoying keeping this space the way it is.  Have you read any great design books lately that have inspired you?  Do you have any plant recommendations for a newbie like me?  Please let me know in the comments!

  1. Oh my gorgeous, what a lovely space! I have gradually moved toward a gray and white color scheme in our house too, and I love it all year round, with just a few touches of seasonal color. We might be kindred spirits! LOVE your puppy too. :)

  5. And now I'm going to have to go right on Amazon and order that book - way to end my no-spend month, huh?? :) I recommend Pathos for a newbie plant lover - they are just about the simplest plants. They do well in lower light and do amazingly in higher light. Easy peasy plants! I have zero luck with ivy, as much as I love it, and same with ferns. Wahhh. Spider plants are good, too - I have a bunch. They like to dry out completely in between waterings. Spider plants are definitely a must have for a boho chic style!

  10. Enjoying your style and comments. My question is what is the make/color of paint that you used on the wall with, among other things the clock and calendar, where the stairs are? Love it.

  22. I love your style. Where did you find the metal hook rack (under the Ampersand sign with the black canvas bag hanging from it)? I've been looking for a Apothecary style hanging rack.
