Hello friends and Happy Friday, Farmhouse Friday that is! It is the 4th Friday of the month which means I am teaming up with some of talented bloggers to share our ideas and love of farmhouse style. Be sure to check out their inspiration at the end of this post. Today's topic is "floral accents" and I have to admit that I don't have much floral anything in our home other than the fresh flowers I buy at Trader Joe's each week. Living in a house full of boys, our master bathroom has been the one space in our home that I allow myself to make a bit more feminine and pretty (apologies to my husband, Billy!). This DIY bathroom is now 3 years old and I still love this room, but I thought it would be fun to make a few small changes. Today I am going to share a bit about my crazy thought process and shopping habits when I set out to refresh a room.
I started with a change to the back of the built-ins by adding some floral drawer liner paper. When I spotted the drawer liner at Marshalls, it reminded me a bit of the watercolor floral wallpaper that is popular from Anthropologie. The box of liners was $4.99 and I started brainstorming ways to use it in my bathroom. I considered using it as, well, drawer liner in the vanity. But that just seemed boring. Then, I considered framing a piece of the paper and leaning it on one of the shelves. But then I came home and decided I wanted to go bolder. So I got out my "tools" (scissors and regular scotch tape) and got busy covering over the bead board with this paper. Easy peasy and it took me about a half an hour. I am frequently drawn to the look of bold wallpaper but always talk myself out of it because I tire of decor so frequently. So this is a temporary (and affordable!) alternative for me.
Idea # 2 ~ Shopping the Bathroom Department...and Beyond
Once the "wallpaper" was up, I had fun with adding some new accessories. I enjoy shopping the bath product aisles at Marshalls and HomeGoods. They often have great quality products at affordable prices. The black and white enamel soap bowl (affiliate link) recently appeared in my "things you might like" feed at Amazon.com and I thought, "Yes! That is exactly something I like." The folks at Amazon are brilliant like that. The wire wastebasket on the top shelf is recent purchase from the Target dollar spot and I thought it would be perfect for holding a few rolls of toilet paper.
Idea #4 ~ Add Unexpected Items
I found the Penguin Classics books on clearance at TJ Maxx for $5 each. How cute are the book jackets on those? I love the vintage vibe they lend to the space. I wouldn't store special books in the bathroom because of moisture, but these clearance books are perfect for in here.
We replaced our linen closet with these built-in shelves so they need to remain functional, as well as pretty. The glass canisters holding the bath salts and soap are from the kitchen department at Target. Speaking of Target, the "don't quit your daydream" towel is a recent find from the kitchen department as well.
The baskets on the shelf under the vanity hold our less pretty bathroom items.
Have you ever tried the "Au Lait" bath products by Scottish Fine Soaps? The Bathing Milk is my very favorite bubble bath. I highly recommend it! Look for it at, where else?, Marshalls, TJ Maxx and HomeGoods. I think we need to come up with a name for those 3 stores combined since they are all sort of the same place. The enamel tray is from the kitchen section from HomeGoods.
I gave our chandelier a good spring cleaning and she is sparkly again. There was a lot of hair spray and dust build up on there and it was looking very dull. I also gave all of the shelves a good wipe down when I took everything off to add the shelf paper wallpaper too. We used vinyl bead board in this room and that was pretty much the best decision every. I wiped down all of the bead board too.
As always, I had a helper with me for this project.
I love to see how a few little changes can make the entire room feel so different. I also appreciate that I can just pull off the floral paper when I want a cleaner look again, which will inevitably happen. The only thing constant around here is change. :)Ready for even more ideas for using floral accents? Check out the posts below!

ReplyDeleteLove, love, love your bathroom! Actually love your entire house...including the super cute puppy! The floral paper gives the room a nice pop of color just in time for spring. Always look forward to reading your blog. You have such pretty taste. Maybe I like it so much since I live in NJ too!

Thanks Kris. I am certainly ready for spring. Although today is cold, we have had some warmer weather and now I can’t wait for the warmer temps to be here to stay!! I hope you are enjoying living with your granddaughter. I am sure she is loving it.
DeleteOh myhow very clever! I just love the drawer liner/wallpaper! You are right. It looks like high end wallpaper. I've got to remember this trick. What a beautiful bathroom!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Yvonne! I have found so much inspiration on your blog so this comment just makes my day.
DeleteLove, love, love your spring updates!!! And of course since your bathroom was the inspiration for my bathroom.....LOVE your bathroom! You do know I'm still drooling over those mirrors that were no longer available, right??
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie,
DeleteThanks so much. It is always so nice to hear that you found inspiration in our home!! Did I ever share with you that you can purchase the mirrors on Amazon? Unfortunately, they are a bit more than I paid though. Here is a link to them. I really wish Lowes still carried them because I feel like so many readers were disappointed when they were discontinued.
Courtney, I'm a huge fan of your blog and style, and love love love that you are a fan of TJMaxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods! I work at their global HQ (TJX Companies) and it's about the best company to work for AND I get to see so many wonderful products hanging out in the hallways and style rooms. It's such a treat to know you are a fan of what we're doing. I'll share with the book buyer that the Penguin Classics are a hit, and I'll have to see if I can find some for myself!
ReplyDeleteHello Ana! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. You and your co-workers are doing an amazing job and yes I am a huge fan. Keep up the good work and I will keep up the shopping :) Thank you for visiting my blog too.
DeleteBeautiful bathroom. Your doggy is too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debby!
DeleteLove the updates Courtney! TJMaxx, Marshalls and Homegoods was a mouthful for my daughter and I and one day she coined the phrase TJMarGoods. So, now when we have our errand day (she's 19 but enjoys hanging out with her momma) we often times put TJMarGoods on the list for no other reason than to pop in each of the stores to see what they have and what we just might "need". Fortunately, we have all 3 stores in our area.
ReplyDeleteTJMarGoods, that's perfect!! Yes, I frequent all of those stores often for "necessities" too ;) Happy shopping!
DeleteI say fortunately all 3 stores are in our area; my husband would probably say not so much :) I will say we have cut back on the trips so hopefully he's noticed!
DeleteSo pretty, Courtney. Good idea with the pretty paper behind the shelves.. Your bath just is really beautiful. That little guy is growing so fast. The tulips make such a pretty farmhouse statement..Happy Weekend..Judy

ReplyDeleteLove it! Great job!!! Your pup is growing!! Adorable!!
ReplyDeleteI am going crazy gaga over the changes in your bath, Courtney! The shelf liner is so pretty, yes, very much like Anthro and you've got to love that. So---you just taped it in so it wasn't permanent? I have a fear of going bold with paint and wallpaper, too. Life is too short to get stuck with something for years. Other things I really love are the soaps in the canisters (can I steal that?!), the cute books and the towels that coordinate so perfectly. And of course that furry little four legged critter. He is staying so light in fur color. My son has an English Cream retriever and he's just a bit lighter than yours.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post...you got daring but it is SO perfect! :)

ReplyDeleteI always love seeing your bathroom and I love the fun updates. The wallpaper is really a cute idea and so easy to change when you get tired of it. I need to get some cute containers for our master bathroom. I love your simple idea of putting soaps in the lidded jar. I think I will do that. Fun post - and adorable puppy! He's cuter all the time!
