I recently changed things up in our family room for summer and added some cabin style decor to remind us of our favorite place to be in the summer, the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate NY. I like to spread the furniture out in this room when we aren't spending as much time around the fireplace. It isn't quite as cozy, but this room always feels so much larger arranged this way.
I kept the plaid chairs by the fireplace and added a few cabin style items from around the house. Some cut birch logs fill the blank space in the fireplace for the summer.
I found the wood and metal arrow above the Schroon Lake sign at HomeGoods last week and the cashier commented that it looked like a weapon. She then proceeded to look at me like I was crazy for buying it when I told her I have 3 boys. I am happy to report that (so far), it has remained in its location on the wall.
I replaced a few of the winter pictures on the planked gallery wall with some summer pictures.
I added a paint by number of an Adirondack lake scene on the mantel. The birch bark canoe is from one of my favorite home decor shops for cabin style items, Hudson River Trading Company in North Creek, NY.
Billy and I plan to spend our retirement in chairs just like in this picture, while we listen the the sounds of the loon on the lake :)
I moved the main seating area to the other side of the room by the planked wall. This opens up some space in the middle of the room for the kids (& dogs) to play in while they are home more often throughout the summer months. I know that designers say not to put your furniture against the walls, but my kids need space and I am not technically a designer so I think it is okay to break this rule :)
Even when we aren't in the Adirondacks this summer, we will be reminded of our favorite place in our family room.
I think it looks great! And leaving that big open space in the middle of the room is very sensible!
ReplyDeleteThe room looks so pretty and cozy! And I say - break those rules! When you have dogs and boys you need open space! Looks beautiful Courtney!

I am with you when it concerns the open space. When my grand children are here we are usually on the floor playing games or drawing. Thank you for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteLove how you decorate the house, so pretty and cozy.
