Adding Curb Appeal with New Shutters

We are so excited about the new facelift our house has gotten just in time for spring!  After we painted our front door a few weeks ago, the rest of the house was looking a bit shabby.  As with so many of our home improvement projects over the years, we fix one thing and that leads to many more projects.  When The Tapco Group contacted us about working together on a project, it could not have come at a better time.  Discosure: The Tapco Group sent us the shutters for this post. We received no other compensation and we always give our honest opinion.

I have been loving the style that board and batten shutters bring to a house and have been pinning pictures of them on Pinterest for a while now.  With that in mind, I checked out the many options for shutters that The Tapco Group has available.  It was so hard to choose!  We finally chose the Mid America 4 board joined shutters in black.

They provide great contrast with our existing cream color siding.  We didn't choose this siding, but we have made it work for us as it is still in good shape.  When we moved in, the shutters and foundation were a dark brown color and we thought for sure the house would need to be re-sided.  Since new siding wasn't in the budget, we power washed what was there and painted the foundation to match.  We were amazed at the difference!  Sometimes just cleaning things up and changing a few accessories are all that is needed to bring new life to a dated home.

Billy (my DIY loving husband) installed the new shutters himself and he said it was easy.  The instructions were clear, just a few screws.  I would say the hardest part of this project was waiting for all the snow to melt so he could safely get up on a ladder.  What a rough winter we had!  We had these beautiful shutters sitting in our foyer waiting to be installed for a couple of weeks.

Since getting the shutters installed, I smile each time I drive up to the house.  I knew they would make a difference, but I didn't realize just how much they would update the entire house.

We are finally enjoying some warm weather here in NJ, so I just had to add some color to our landscaping with some spring flowers.  We also added a fresh layer of black mulch to freshen things up.

I love the detail of the board and batten shutters and the fact that they are vinyl means they will be easy to maintain.Black board and batten shutters on cream house-www.goldenboysandme.com

Our golden retrievers, Forrest and Keeper, are excited about our "new" house too!

We are all super excited about our new shutters.  Here is a quick look at a comparison of the before and after.  Before, the shutters were a cranberry color that had faded.  After, the new black shutters look fresh and crisp.
Our old split level feels new again.

    1. Thanks Lisa! I am so happy with the difference these shutters made. I just got back from BJs and I purchased a large container of Preen. I hope it works as well for me as it does for you. Anything to avoid having to pull as many weeds in the summer heat!

  5. Wow, your house looks great! I really like the black front door and the shutters, and I've never seen black mulch before - it's perfect with your house. Your front walkway is very nice, especially with those Goldens welcoming all visitors. :)

  6. Love, love your new shutters, Courtney! That style is so nice. I think if we were in a house again I would go with that style. We just did new siding before we moved almost 4 years ago and black would have been my choice, too, if we had gotten that far before we moved. We had white before redoing the siding, but I painted our front door black and wanted to do black shutters. It gives such a classic look and they really stand out nicely on your house.
