Saturday Spotlight Feature and a New Chair

Hello and Happy Saturday!  We have had a busy week of painting (our family room wall unit) and planking (a wall in our family room).  We are right in the middle of the planking so that is what is on the agenda during our free time this weekend.  We also took a trip to Ikea for a few small items and ended up coming home with a chair!   The new Stocksund chair to be exact.

It wasn't a total impulse purchase because I have had my eye out for a more comfortable chair to replace the Ikea Jennylund chair that used to be here.  I love what the old chair looked like but it was uncomfortable to sit in for more than a few minutes.  This new chair is roomy (almost chair and a half size) and comfy.  I was able to choose which color legs I preferred and I went with the lighter birch color (the other choice was black).  I may end up painting the legs but I haven't decided yet.  My youngest fell asleep in it the first night proving it is perfect for us.

It is slipcovered in a great fabric that appears linen-ish but it is machine washable, which is a must for us in this house.  They also had a lighter gray and a darker gray option.  That is why I love buying at Ikea. When you enjoy changing things as often as I do, their slipcovers allow for that for not too much $$.

And the gray check Jennylund still has a place in the room.  Now we have a cozy seating area all around our hacked Hemnes coffee table.

Also, today I am being featured over at Junk Chic Cottage.  I was so honored when the lovely Kris asked me to be a part of her series, Saturday Spotlight.  I have learned so much more about some of my favorite bloggers there!  Please stop over and check it out if you have time and want to learn a bit more about me and my life behind this blog :)  I would really appreciate it!
Have a wonderful weekend!!

  1. Hi Courtney, 'met' you over at Kris, and wanted to come visit and let you know I'm following your blog now. Kris featured me in Feb and she is such a friend to so many - just one of the reasons I love her.

Having just returned from a trip through part of NY, Canada and ME, I often wonder what it's like for a family to carve out a lifestyle while living so close to NYC - now I'll learn! I love that you love the mountains too - living in the mountain state (WV), we're never too far from the hills, even when living in the capital city. I look forward to following your blog.

  3. Hi Courtney! Just came over from Kris' feature on you to visit. : ) That chair looks really comfortable. I have one of their Ektorp chairs which I just love. I paired it with an ottoman and I'm good to go in front of the fire place in the winter months with a throw across my lap and a book in my hands! I also love that their slipcovers make it easy to make changes. I actually updated my chair a few years ago by getting the white slipcover for it. I'm also thinking of revisiting Ikea for a small sectional for our sunroom/tv room since the one we have in there now seems to be doing our backs no favors.

  10. Hi Courtney, I have been on the lookout for a comfortable chair in our rather small living room. We have the Ektorp sofa, the Hemnes coffee table, a leather recliner and a small stuffed armchair in green ticking. Since my colors are navy, white and I'm not sure what else yet, the green ticking has to go (it's old and stained anyway). I was thinking of recovering it but I'm not sure I am skilled enough yet for that, so I'm either looking at the Ektorp chair or the Stocksund. Which would you say is the smaller choice? I already think we have some rather large pieces for our space and eventually the recliner may have to go (hubby says no, but ....). Thanks for your help. Also what cover did you get on your Stocksund. I was hoping they had white but I like the linen look of yours.

    1. Hi Karen, I love the Stocksund chair. We have the Ektorp chair (& ottoman) with a white cover in our master bedroom too. I would say they are a similar size, but the legs with the open bottom on the Stocksund take up less visual space. The cover on the Stocksund is more of a linen and they do not offer bright white. I prefer the linen anyway. It is so much easier to keep clean than the Ektorp white. I would also recommend the Stocksund for comfort over the Ektorp. Hope that helps!

  11. Hi Courtney. Another question for you. We are deciding between the Ektorop and Stocksund for a kid's room. Do you think they are both wide enough to sit comfortably with a toddler on your lap?

    1. I think the Stocksund would be more comfortable with a child on your lap.

  12. How's it holding up after all this time? Also, how hard is it to get the slipcovers on after you've washed them? The ektorp chairs can be so hard to reslipcover

    1. Holding up great! I have washed the slipcover several times and no problem putting it back on, especially if it is slightly damp.

  13. I've fallen in love with the birch lane Montgomery sofa but just found stocksund (cheaper alternative for our house with little ones) and was so happy to find your review after a Google search. I enjoyed the post so much I started to surf around your blog and lo' and behold!!!, you also own Montgomery!!! So, oh expert, how would you compare the two? Why did you choose birch lane over ikea when getting the sofa?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hello! Yes, the Montgomery and Stocksund have a similar look and I faced the same dilemma as you. After living with both the chair and sofa for a while now, I will say that I prefer the look of the Montgomery. Also, the Montgomery is definitely more stable and since I have 3 older boys, I need stable! If you had the same situation, I would say definitely go for the Montgomery. However, you mentioned you have little ones and my concern for you is that the Birch Lane slipcovers are NOT machine washable. I will have to take this slipcover to the dry cleaner. The Ikea slipcovers are machine washable AND readily available at Ikea if you need to replace it. How young are your kids? If they are still pretty little, my recommendation is to go with the Stocksund for now. It will give you a similar look and you won't be so worried about washing the slipcover. Sorry if I only confused you more....

    2. So helpful! Thank you for the quick response. We're going with the stocksund. You (and the stomach virus my five year old had this weekend) really sealed the deal on the need for machine washable covers. Since we live close to the Canadian border, and the exchange rate is awesome for us at the moment, we'll be heading north for an ikea adventure. Thanks again!!

    3. Yay! Glad to hear I was of help. Have a great time on your Ikea adventure!! Please keep me updated about your new Stocksund :)
