When we decided to paint our wall unit rather than retire it for a console with a tv hung above it, our main consideration was storage. We store a bunch of stuff in there, both decoratively and behind closed doors. In fact, storage was taken into consideration throughout our family room and today I am sharing where we keep things. Let's start with decorative baskets that are also so very functional.
Baskets add warmth and storage and they are probably my favorite decorative element in a room to make it feel homey and lived in. I usually shop for baskets at HomeGoods and Target.
My boys are getting older so toys don't fill this space like they once did. Now, we have one basket (from Target) hidden behind a chair that holds a few toys that still occasionally get played with. We used to have several large baskets like these for toys.
They may not play with actual toys, but we have an abundance of video gaming equipment.
They keep their video game discs in a binder. The piles of video game boxes that were gathering all over the family room began to drive me crazy. Now, they take the games out of the boxes they came in and store them in a binder which takes up much less valuable storage space. They hold onto the actual cases in their bedroom closets in case they want to sell or trade in a game at Gamestop.
Under the tv and in the side cabinets, we store movies, games, and video game equipment.
Those small Ikea baskets are the perfect size for movies.
Finally, here is a look at the other view of the room. Our Crate and Barrel trunk style coffee table is also useful for storage. And I can't say enough about how great our leather furniture has been for kids and dogs.
I hope I was able to spark an idea for ways to store things in your house. And I am always on the hunt for ways to make things a bit more organized at our house so please share if you have any ideas that are working great for you!
It was smart to just makeover your entertainment center, Courtney. That storage is definitely a good thing to have. We had a large unit at our old house and it held quite a few things, similar to what you showed here. You just don't realize sometimes just what a workhorse some of these pieces are until you contemplate getting rid of them. Yours serves a function and looks great at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathy! Yes, I have definitely learned through the years that it is even more important to look at how a room functions than how it appears design wise. Thanks so much for stopping by.
DeleteHi Courtney,
ReplyDeleteI love all your sweet baskets for storage. Those books shelves are so great and I love how much storage you get with them. I just sold my white slipcovered sectional and am awaiting a new leather sectional. I was happy to see how you love it with the dogs and family lounging that is what I am looking forward too. Glad to hear you are happy with the leather and the dogs. Have a great day.
Kris
Hi Kris,
DeleteI think you will just love your leather sectional! I love slipcovered furniture, but it just isn’t practical for us with the dogs. Our leather has been so easy to take care of. You have a great day too! Courtney
Oh Courtney everything is so homey and welcoming. I love it that we use similar colors, love your rich warm tones. xxx....Brooke
ReplyDeleteBrooke,
DeleteHomey and welcoming is exactly how I hope my home feels so thank you!! And that is exactly how I would describe your home as well!! Courtney
Great ideas, Courtney. I use a lot of baskets, too, for all sorts of "hidden" storage. Your room is warm and welcoming and looks great. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diana. I can never have too many baskets!! They are perfect for hiding things. Thanks for visiting. Courtney
DeleteLove your room and how you have used the baskets to store all the items. Such a great idea! Take care. Maria
ReplyDeleteThanks Maria Elena! I do love baskets :)
DeleteI love your family room! Everything looks so well organized and nice and neat. I always feel like I have to make the most of valuable space but it needs to look good also. I think you have done that so well!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeanette! Hopefully it will stay nice and neat and organized too. That is the real test :)
DeleteYou've done a wonderful job of creating lots of storage areas without looking like there is lots of stuff! The entertainment center looks great painted white, too...the whole room is warm and lovely, Courtney!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Linda! I was really nervous about painting the wall unit. I bought the paint but kept putting off the project of actually painting it. Now I am so glad we did!!
