Easy Stenciled Memo Board

This summer, my two youngest boys decided that they no longer wanted to share a bedroom.  As I squelched my own disappointment at losing the extra room I had hoped to make into a craft room/home office, I realized that my youngest guy needed some wall art to make this room his own.  Enter this amazing box of Americana mixed media stencils and multi surface paints that I was so excited to receive.  I got busy making him a monogrammed message board...

Supplies:

*Magnetic Memo Board

*Americana Multi-Surface Satin (I used colors: Pumpkin Patch and Blue Bird)

*Americana Mixed Media Stencils (I used Angular Motion, Retro Mod, and 5" Stencil Font Alphabet)

*Foam Spouncer

*Foam Brush

*Masking Tape

*Americana Clear Chalkboard Coating

I started with a magnetic memo board purchased years ago at Ikea that I stole borrowed from my oldest boy's room.  

I was a tiny bit skeptical about how the paint would stick to the metal.  Americana multi-surface paint is made to be used on pretty much ANY (metal, wood, plastic,glass and fabric) surface, so I had to give it a shot on metal.  It worked great!  

I chose to use a combination of these stencils (Angular Motion stencil and Retro Mod stencil) and a large "M" stencil (5" Stencil Font Alphabet).

First, choose your design and stencil using Americana Multi-Surface Satin.   Americana Multi-Surface Satins are available for purchase at Michaels, A.C. Moore, Hobby Lobby, and other fine craft retailers.  I chose a vibrant orange (Pumpkin Patch) and blue (Blue Bird). 

Next, I taped the stencil to the board so it wouldn't move.  Then, I applied the paint using the pouncer method (pounce up and down with the sponge brush).  It worked great.  The paint did not bleed and it was easy to get an even coat on the metal. 

After the paint dried, I coated the entire board using my new favorite product, Americana Clear Chalkboard coating.  This paint turns pretty much any surface into a chalkboard.  I used a medium sized foam brush to apply two coats, first vertically and then horizontally allowing to dry for one hour between coats.

Finally, after allowing the board to dry for 24 hours, I "seasoned" the new chalkboard like you would do with any other chalk paint, covering the entire surface with a piece chalk turned on its side.  Here is Matty and his new seasoned chalkboard that he is very exited about.

We added a magnetic chalk holder and eraser and we were done.
