Somehow, I never quite got around to making a cushion for the bench in our eating nook in our kitchen. One year later, I finally completed this project a few weeks ago. I love how it finishes off the space, not to mention that the seat is much more comfortable...
Here is what we started with. You can read about how we re-purposed our old wall unit to create this kitchen nook here.
I purchased the foam at Joann's. It was pricey because I wanted the 4" thick cushion, but I like how the thicker cushion looks.
For fabric, I used a drapery panel that I purchased at Lowes. I loved the pattern and the price was right.
I used a serrated knife to cut the foam to the correct size. After that, I wrapped both the batting and fabric around the foam. I wrapped it just like you would a present and secured it with safety pins. That way I can change it up at any time if I get tired of this fabric when my kids destroy it.
I love how it finishes off the space. I wish I had done this sooner! So easy.

ReplyDeleteAnother thing you can try is Velcro! I got some industrial strength, self adhesive Velcro for the fabric on our bench cushions. My kids also destroy everything! It had been holding together for over a year, through 4 crazy boys!
ReplyDeleteIt looks awesome! I was just thinking about using drapery panels for making cushions too... the other day at Target the idea hit me! Great minds think alike:) Might have to do the same for our pew and our downstairs benches. Yes, foam is sure pricey!
ReplyDeleteI have found some great deals on fabric at Goodwill. I just bought a few curtains and I am planning on making a cushion for my glider outside. Does anyone know if the industrial velcro is weatherproof? We get temps in the 100s in the summer. I am also going to try making pillowcases from the fabric. I am a beginning sewer, but everyone on Pinterest has such inspiring ideas, I need to get started. The cushion looks very comfy. Nice job!

ReplyDeleteFabric quality was the important factor at the time of buying. There are many types of brands available in the market. It is totally based upon the durability of the fabric. Choose a sofa which has a tough hard fabric like northcroftfabrics-Damask fabric. Visit the many shops and after that take a decision.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration. I was going to purchase a custom cushion but this looks so easy that I think I'll give it a try myself! I will be following your blog now. Thanks again! From a fellow Golden mommy!
ReplyDeleteLove this. It really inspires me, not just the cushions but the whole look! Makes life with boys that much easier.
ReplyDeleteHi! How did you take apart and cut wood? Thanks! Patty :)
